Economic Crime

Programme Challenger works closely with the Greater Manchester Police
Economic Crime Unit (ECU) to develop responses to economic crime.

Economic crime affects the public, communities and businesses in various ways. Economic crime encompasses, fraud, email, telephone scams, money laundering, illegal money lending, doorstep and rogue trader crime which can have a devastating impact on individuals, families and communities. Programme Challenger and the ECU identify opportunities to target criminals engaged

in organised crime to remove the financial assets they have made from their criminality, including businesses, property, vehicles or money. The main objective of this work is to identify vulnerable victims and the opportunities available to prevent people becoming victims of economic crime and to educate communities in how to protect themselves from economic crime making it more difficult for criminals to make financial gain from this criminality.

Cyber and Economic Crime Awareness Service

On the 1st November 2017, Greater Manchester Police launched the Cyber and Economic Crime Awareness Service (CECAS) located within the Economic Crime Service at Nexus House. There are three main strands to the new service which includes safeguarding victims, prevention, awareness and disrupting offenders.

CECAS will identify vulnerable victims from our own victim data and Action Fraud referrals. We will make contact with victims or their guardians if preferred, to enable an assessment of need and to ensure that they do not become a repeat victim of crime. Victims, where necessary will be visited by staff and volunteers attached to the Economic Crime Service and maybe be signposted to other agencies to provide longer term support. The service will also work with partners, voluntary sector and  private companies to support a prevent and protect network across Greater Manchester.  By sharing intelligence with partners we can create dynamic opportunities to disrupt offenders.
